It has been noticed that there has been a lot of interest about this area over the years, especially regarding sightings of arial phenomena.
Well BUFOS has had quite a few reports of UFOs being sighted around this area over the years, ranging from group sightings to singular sightings and they all add to the overall sightings total from this area.
A couple of months ago Rivington was listed in the top 10 areas for the sighting of UFOs in one of our national papers.
That in itself did not surprise me in the slightest to be honest, we have known that for years but who's going to listen anyway.
We have even had Police officers banging on the front door wishing to report things that they themselves have seen around this area. Now if they can come forward why doesnt everyone else who see these things around here?
In July 1999 we were holding our monthly skywatch, not forgetting that we have been up there many times. It was about 11.30pm when one of group members saw an object in the sky flying toward Darwen, we caught the whole event on video which lasts for around 15mins.
The papers were informed and we ended up taking part in a reconstruction of the event for a programme called Watch The Skies, for Granada Tv.
On the night people who were driving around the area just stopped in there cars to ask what this object was as they had seen nothing like this before.
Tim Mathews from a group called LUFOS had got in touch with the BEN and reported that in was indeed a light aircraft. Well, i am damn sure people can reconise a light aircraft if they saw one but this is not what it was and to this day we still wonder about this object.
As i have said earlier the number of sightings around Rivington is strange and what is the attraction?
Even stranger is the photo that a man from Blackrod took a few years ago showing a snowy landscape and above the Pike was an object about 40ft in length flying over the Pike.
Now this was dismissed as,now get this. a swan!
So not only do we have UFOs around Rivington but also 40ft swans, what can i say to that one?
This came from the MOD if my memory serves me correctly, and these idiots are supposed to protect our country, lucky us eh!
To top it all these guys call us weird, ha ha.
Maybe this 40ft swan was on a secret mission to Iraq to help our boys over there, who knows?
Anyway below are some of the sightings of that have been reported to us over the years you may find some the these sightings interesting it's just a pitty their are no pictures to go with the sightings.

1971/ In May 1971 six residents from Harwood watched an object which appeared over Winter Hill just after midnite.
The object, which glowed amber and made a buzzing noise, hovered high above the TV mast and later dissapeared.
One observer described it as like a great lump of meat on a plate.
In August of the same year, a group of witnesses reported seeing a formation of four glowing objects flying towards Winter Hill.
2000/ A brightly lit object was seen from Bury New Rd by Andrew Scott,it was moving at a very fast pace to the direction of Rivington Pike. Andrew said that it was quite clowdy but there was a clear patch in the nite sky and as i was walking along i noticed a really bright white light.
It slowly became bigger as though it was getting closer then it shot off in the direction of Rivington at a tremendous rate of speed.
2001/ Late evening and Margret Taylor from Green Lane in Horwich was bringing her washing in from her garden and noticed 3 glowing objects slowly moving from Rivington Pike but as they moved they seemed to twinke as they did so.
At first she thought it could have been people with torches or lanterns untill they darted off vertically.
"I have never seen anything like it before and i have been living around these parts since i was a little girl, i know people has seen strange things up there but i never believed them till now"
1997/ A gentleman was walking his dog in the area known as Anglezark over looking the resevoir, he noticed a dark triangular shaped object around 45 ft in size just rise up from the bottom of the overlook point and slowly fly away in the direction of Preston.
2002/ Mr&Mrs Cheetam from Chorley were enjoying a country stroll around the Pigeon Tower area of Rivington. The sky was clear and their were plenty of people just walking around the area at the time.
They started to head towards the Chinese Gardens area when they both noticed two triangular shaped objects flying towards the area with what looked like two fighter jets close behind the objects.
They were out of sight in a couple of minutes.
2002/Report from two Police officers.
We were driving from Belmont Village over the top road which cuts through Rivington when we noticed an object above Anglezark, at first we thought it was just car head lights but we soon realised that this glowing object was nowhere near that area and was actually hovering above that area.
We headed off to investigate this "light" but as we got nearer to it it dissapeared only to reapear 5 mins later behind us. We stopped the patrol car in the hope we could take some pictures of the object but it moved off very quickly and out of sight in a matter of seconds, "Strange" as one of the officers put it.
There are plenty more cases like these i will put more on this page as i come across them as i dig through our archives.
2007/ Another sighting was reported to me just this week of a sighting tht was made back in 1995 or their abouts.
Brian was with his partner, who's father lived on Wigan Rd, opposite the Rumworth pub.
One night they were out on the main roadand could see a bright light coming from Winter Hill, they watched this light for a couple of minutes and discounted the things that it could have been ,ie, car lights etc.
It was not a house light as it only looked like one light and was to low to be an aircraft.
One minute it was there and the next it was gone, they have said that they had only looked away for a secind and looked again to find that it had gone.
Brian also adds that they were looking over from Wigan Rd the top of Deane and it was to the right of the TV mast but seemingly halfway down the hill, possibly at about the level of Scout Rd as the light was so bright he couldnt give any idea if it was on the side of the hill or if there was any distance between the light and Winter Hill.
MILITARY CHASE UFO..
Over the years we here at the Bolton ufo society have heard some strange and wonderfull sightings in and around the Rivinton Pike area and non more so than a sighting dating back to around 1994.
A gentleman rang me this week after viewing the Rivington Sightings Page this week and began to tell me of a sighting that he had made in that year..
He did not leave his name but after the conversation he emailed to me the events that took place with his sighting..
IN HIS OWN WORDS....
I was getting ready for work and was opening the curtains when to my left i noticed a large bright object, i kept it in my peripheral vision as i scanned the right side of my street to see if anyone else had noticed this.
About 60ft away and 15ft below my elevation was a marked police car just sittint there with one officer inside,
I noticed from his position he would not be able to see what i was seeing at that time as his view to the lft was obstructed by a row of houses.
I decided at that time to monitor this object through my 10x50 binoculars which i kept on the window sill to see if i could gather more detail of what i was looking at, but even through my binoculars no shape could be seen, just a bright glow which was whitish\yellow.
It started to move away from Darwin Tower in a westerly direction very slowly, i noticed when it was stationary its glow was steady but when it was moving it started to pulsate.
As it continued on its westerly course i waited to were i thought i would come back into view of the stationary police officer below me and when it reached this point i looked towards the police car to see if he would notice and i am certain he did from his head movements which i could clearly see from my vantage point, i could see his head moving as he followed the object.
I focused back on the object and once again it became stationary(after consulting maps) the Rivington areawas just above a wooded area and at the time it came into view i could see 4 smaller black objects, to the eye they looked like birds but through my 10x50s i could clearly see 4 military aircraft and they started circling this object. After a few seconds this object stopped glowing and shot upwards at an incredible speed, so fast i was unable to follow through my binoculars.
I tried to see itunaided but it was gone.
The military planes then stopped circling the area and left so did the police car and i carried on as normal and went to work.
RIVINGTON PIKE IS A GREAT VANTAGE POINT FOR SKYWATCHING..
