Ever since the group was started back in 1996 we here at BUFOS have heard various tales about an old and maybe abandonned Rof site around the Rivington area. The location baffled us for a couple of years when accidently we found the old base just outside Chorley.
We had heard the rumours that old steam engines were being stored there within the site itself and the site was being used for the old stratigic reserve. Over the following couple of months we had kept our eyes on the site and that means going over to the site in the early hours of the morning just to see if there was any activity there. There never was any as far as we could make out, but evidence did show that this site for whay ever reason was being used.
I contacted the head office of the site which is in Euxton and asked questions as to what it was the site was used for, they replied that the site had not been used in years, i pointed out that at night the place is lit up like a xmas tree
the reply i got back again was the same,; the site is not being used;.
Now either we are a bit thick or those nice guys at Euxton are telling porkies.
Anyway we kept tabs on Heapey for a while well ok a couple of years and still with the intension of getting answers when one day i rang those guys at Euxton and got the shock of my live when i was invited to go there and take a look for myself, under escort of course, i agreed, well who wouldnt?
We agreed a time and date and off i trot but without any camera as that was the rule. Bugger!
On arriving at Heapey i was met by two guys, one in a white 4x4 the other was in uniform of some kind, introductions came and went and off we went into Heapey.
The place is a mess old buildings falling to bits and the gates were falling off there hinges, the place just looked in a really bad way. On entering the first set of gates i noticed cctv above these gates and on inspecting the area there were cameras everywhere! Wow, not bad for a base which is not being used.
I was shown to the first of four large shutter doors which are built into the hillside of which you can see when you drive past the place, the doors were opened and low and behold inside were another three sets of doors. I asked the guy in uniform if he was about to open these doors as well so that i could see inside, no such luck im affraid, didnt have the keys was the reply i got, and to add insult to injury he did not have the keys to any of the internal shutter doors.
Right, ok so why have i been invited down here just to see three more sets of doors inside each set of bomb proof doors you can easily see from the main road. I still dont know why that was.
I was told that behind the three sets of internal doors was as big inside as the Reebock stadium, but like i have too we are just going to have to take his word on that one im affraid.
But anyway i have, well lets just say accuired some pictures of the Heapey site.
